Smoking Cost Calculator
See what smoking costs your wallet and your life expectancy.
About this tool
This calculator shows the real financial and life-expectancy cost of smoking, using two well-established figures: the price you pay locally, and the population estimate that each cigarette shortens life by roughly 11 minutes (Mons & Brenner; CDC).
The intent isn't to shame — it's to make abstract numbers concrete. Most people are surprised by both the dollar total and the days-of-life figure.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 11-minutes-per-cigarette figure exact?
It's a population-level approximation, but it's used by the CDC and major public health bodies. Individual variation is large.
Does the lifetime cost include health-care costs?
No — only out-of-pocket cost of cigarettes. Health-care costs (and lost productivity) typically add 50–100% more.
What works for quitting?
Combination NRT (patch + gum/lozenge) or varenicline, plus behavioural support, roughly triples the chance of long-term quit compared with willpower alone.
